Restorer
Since her early beginnings in Cuba, Ivonne has combined her work as an artist with her talent for restoration. She studies art conservation in her native country and soon after joins the group in charge of this endeavor at the Museum of the City of Havana, where she works for several years. Subsequently, in Spain, she signs a contract with the prestigious firm Oppenheim, a company devoted to restoration and mural painting, an opportunity which also allows her to continue working in the field of restoration. She then completes her training in this discipline, following a course of studies that broadens her knowledge and acquaints her with the most innovative techniques. It is at this time that she approaches the works of the great masters and of classical European and Latin American painters, an experience that enables her to transcend Cuban and Spanish art.
Ivonne is perhaps among the few restorers whose meticulous work has been covered by the press, as was the case when El Nuevo Herald published an extensive article by Ivonne Gomez that appeared on the front page of Galería’s Diseño y Novedades section, entitled Ivonne Ferrer, el arte de la restauración [Ivonne Ferrer, The Art of Restoration], wherein the author states that “…[she] succeeds in giving new life to works that were on the verge of destruction (…) Works are brought to her from abroad as well. Through her efforts, a primitive Dutch painting was restored (…) ‘The Cisneros family decorator brought us the painting, which had been torn in four places by a lamp that had fallen on it,’ says César Oñate, owner of Oñate Framing Gallery. ‘Ivonne relined the canvas and restored it in such a way that the damage was no longer visible. But most importantly, the work did not lose its original essence,’ Oñate continued to explain.”
